Why Sarah Palin Quit

excerpt:
Palin's stunning announcement raised more questions than it answered: Is she bowing out of public life? Is there a more nefarious reason for her resignation after only two-and-half years in office — yet another G.O.P. scandal in the offing? Or is the woman who tops most G.O.P. 2012 shortlists to challenge Barack Obama stepping down to get a head start on her next presidential campaign?

If her goal is to position herself for higher office, the stagecraft and timing of her announcement left Republicans scratching their heads. The Friday before Independence Day, when media attention is at its lowest, would be a more appropriate moment for a scandal-plagued politician to slink from the national stage.

I think this has left a lot of people scratching their heads. It leads one to believe that something else may be afoot.

Is anybody paying attention? Think about what's been going on in the news lately. Governor Mark Sanford (SC) admits there were more women. Governor Palin just resigned out of nowhere. Back in May, Governor Sanford and Governor Palin had a BET relating to the South Carolina Stingrays and Alaska Aces ECHL Kelly Cup finals game. If Sanford won, he got Alaskan Salmon. If Palin won, she got shrimp and grits from SC. Okay - let's think hard - what really was the bet? Did Palin give Sanford more than Alaskan salmon? SUDDEN, SUDDEN, SUDDEN decision on her part after he just pours his heart out about more trysts.

In the middle of this monster Palin Chaos Theory post, commenter-person Alaska Girl reminds us why Sarah Palin's latest "I'm gonna take my ball and go home" move is standard Wasilla Snowbilly behavior: "She didn't finish her term as mayor, stepping down to run for Lt. Governor. She didn't finish her term on the petroleum board ethics panel, she resigned in protest and then ran for Governor. She doesn't want the office, she just likes running for office.

Really, though....I think that it MIGHT happen that Sarah becomes the titular head of an Alaskan secessionist movement intent upon corralling the remaining oil and natural gas profits up there, after bashing the lower 48 as foreign gay atheist baby killers whose only concern is burning flags and propagandizing global warming.

If her objective was a 2012 run for POTUS, she would have been better off finishing her term as governor and simply announcing that she would not re-run for office.

To quit after 2 1/2 years in her first term as governor suggests a person who cannot multitask, handle the pressures that come with the job (working with the legislature, dealing with the press, etc), and someone who is more interesting in being in the spotlight and waving to the crowds than she is in being a serious political force.

I agree. The points or reasons she made in her speech didn't make sense. Someone needs to explain to her what a lame duck is for starters. She mentioned not being a quitter, while she was quitting? Many presidential candidates hold office while running for POTUS, not a good argument. She takes several swipes at the media, not a good political move. A crack about the "liberal 9th circuit". She was all over the place. Something is wrong with this picture.

Btw, everywhere I go, there you are. Why aren't we friends?

Apparently theres been controversey in Alaska about her book deal and whether its taking her focus away from being Governor.

I've noticed many of the GOP frontrunners have signed book deals this year. Obama has left the GOP with the impression that a book deal is a shortcut to the Presidency.

There is a lot of speculation. One of the most prominent stories on various sites is this one:

Sarah Palin is reportedly facing indictments for using money that was supposed to fund the construction of the Wasilla Sports Complex to build her own house.Spenard Building Supplies also known as SBS,has close ties to Sarah Palin and her husband Todd, this is the same company that built their home and the sports complex and hockey rink. Federal investigators are allegedly looking into this relationship.

I read somewhere once that narcissists tend to burst bubbles in tandem. For example, if a narcissist suffers disillusionment at work they might follow it up with shutting down personal relationships or giving up on their marriage. One way of trying to decode this is that she has been disillusioned on the national political stage and seeks to follow this up by withdrawing from politics altogether. The ambiguous moments in her press conference still indicate that she open to being wooed into running for the presidency. But the burden is upon us.

I'll pass on that and wish her well in whatever she does, so long as I don't have to hear about her again.

I think by feminist you mean leftist ideologue. Otherwise your comment makes no sense. THe left only support black rights if the black in question is a democrat; hispanic rights if the hispanic is a democrat; and women's rights if the women is a democrat. The left spouts the basest forms of dishonesty and hypocrisy, and labels it a virtue. But crap, by any other name, is stil crap.

ds,

If you have an ax to grind about the "left" and democrats, please write an article. Do not presume to know what I think, or put words in my mouth. Your anger about the "left" is apparent in every seed you visit.

I seeded this article to discuss her and the motives of a politician, any politician perhaps, but a politician who has in less than a year risen from relative obscurity to a recognized figure on the public stage.

I would argue that your comment makes no sense and is off-topic.

Really? You have an interesting grasp of the language.

did not counter my point, I'm guessing you know I'm right.

You're right, you are guessing. No one should be elected, promoted, hired, admired or held up as an example by virtue of their sex, race, religion or party - to name a few. I am no rabid feminist. What I said was, "From a feminist perspective alone she makes me grind my teeth. An opinion.

You responded with a knee-jerk left bashing rant. You also continue to make assumptions and persist in your defensive snarky attitude. You don't appear to want to have a dialog, but rather rail at anything you perceive to be a part of some kind of leftist agenda. That's MY opinion. I look forward to your response which, according to trend, will include sweeping generalizations and broad stroke remarks about "the left" and "liberals".

Palin has rebuffed FIFTEEN baseless charges from the rabid left already. I doubt there is much but wishful thinking behind the stuttering on this thread.

I imagine Palin has decided that quitting now is the best idea for her. I can't imagine her not running in '12, especially when she sees obama's poll numbers falling and even Powell now retracting his support for obama. She and Romney are the presumed front runners for the 12 nomination, and together would form a strong ticket, whoever is on top.

Just wait and see. After Obama has turned this country into a European welfare society with a 15-20 trillion debt and with thousands of dead American soldiers in Afghanistan Palin will be the only choice in 2012. Better get used to the idea - it's right around the corner.

This is not a seed titled "Obama v. Palin" or "Republicans v. Democrats".

Why do you think she resigned? What do you think her plans are? Was this an abrupt decision or one in the making for some time? Do you think she is leaving politics? That kind of thing. I'm interested in the 'psychology' and motivation behind what appears to many to be a rash decision.

Thank you.

Palin, and now her spin doctor Meg Stapleton, keeps using this silly metaphor about being a point guard and passing the ball to another player while driving down the court.

Well, if she really wants to use this analogy accurately, she has essentially pulled herself out of the game because the defensive pressure was too intense for her to handle.

Sarah Palin now sees herself as a national figure. Alaska, in many ways, is a drag on her aspirations.

The sooner she leaves Alaska the sooner she can begin her career as an ongoing commentator on national issues. I expect her to have a national talk show, probably on Fox, by the end of the year. Just as likely is a daily talk radio program, syndicated from somewhere like L.A.

The biggest complaint about Sarah Palin, other than the completely irrational and hate based ones, is that she is incompetent to discuss national and international issues. Hosting talk shows will eventually cure those perceptions of her, and if she is as smart as people say, she will eventually become facile with most of the important issues.

Leaving Alaska puts the basis for much of the irrationality about Palin behind her. The 'seeing Russia from my house' themes of SNL will be replaced by whatever she becomes in the lower 48 media spotlight over the next 5 years or so.

Or she will run for US Senate from Alaska, certainly that is a possibility.

But I think Sarah Palin , talk show host, and conservative book author, is where this is , for the time being, headed.

That is one of the ideas put forth in the article, stepping away from the Alaska spotlight and speaking, learning more about foreign policy, national issues, etc. Getting away from what has become perhaps a negative connection to Alaska. Not that Alaska is negative, but I guess maybe an image makeover.

Palin claims that she left office before finishing her first term because she desires to "serve a higher calling" (what ever that might be). Basically, this is Palin-spin for "my current job has become a ball-and-chain holding me back from pursuing my personal ambitions and my desires to attain greater wealth and political clout in the lower 48".

Something else other than her rambling on reasons? Absolutely!

Have you noticed that 2 Republicans have come out in the recent weeks admitting to crimes against their parties base values? I don't think she is covering up an affair in this case, but she has been given an ultimatum to resign and some time to wrap up unfinished business before it comes out to be public info.

It is possible that she is looking at a run for the senate, but to quit the top spot in Alaskan politics is not very professional from a business prospective. I vote for people that finish what they start.

    Bye Bye Sarah.

At least she was able to speak without a telprompter. Her answers were honest and straight forward. She will be a successful motivational speaker, fund raiser etc. As she clearly pointed out, she doesn't want tobe alame duck governor who is just interested in drawing a check. She's not loaded like Uhbama and his cronies. She represented that common person who worked hew way up, not handed anything on a silver platter. She has more integrity inher little finger, than this clown we have in office who lies to the American public and makes promises he can't and won't keep, while bankrupting us all. And those critics who say that she is once again making herself the victim, i put to you that Obama is still blaming Bush, and that's getting old. After all, he's doubled our debt and is going to put this country in dire straits. I'd rather have an honest Palain in any office than the likes of crooks, swindlers and liars in this Uhbama administration that are ruining this country's ecconomic and foreign policies as we speak. The woman did nothing to warrant the treatment from the kiss-ass media and the Dems. Problem is, they are all scared to death of her, because like her or not, she can draw crowds. Now, she's free to go where she pleases and become a front runner (if that is her motive). And I will repeat it again, the media and Dems are terrified of her, and that's why they trashed her. 18 frivilous ethics charges just prove my point.

Martin, It is clear that you watch Faux News and listen to Rush Limbaugh. Here you are with access to the internet and you still refuse to investigate political issues to prove or disprove what you hear from your two primary sources for the truth? At least when you hear something from there, do a look up and see if there is another side or incomplete info that you were not told. I also find it helpful if reading a 15 word sentence to read the whole thing rather than every other word. Get educated like Sarah should be also working on before commenting on such a rediculous stand of invalid information.

On a lighter note, I saw two posts in other threads about the Palin resignation that are worth a chuckle.

One poster speculated that she resigned because she's been accepted at a top university where she'll be majoring in political science.

Another opined that she was resigning to pursue a career as a Tina Fey impersonator.

On the serious side, the news cycle timing and Palin's nervous, disjointed, rambling excuse about lame-duck-ness make me raise an eyebrow.

It'll certainly be interesting to watch how this plays out.
